Joywave and Cold War Kids @ The Van Buren in Phoenix, AZ

Review & Photography by: Luxicon Photography

Last night I got the privilege of photographing Joywave and Cold War Kids for the first ever show at the brand new venue in downtown Phoenix, The Van Buren.  This show sold out all its tickets the day they went on sale.  Energy was high as everyone excitedly shuffled in to check out the new venue and find their places to watch the first performances there.  Before the first band took the stage a big check was presented giving a portion of the night’s proceeds to Rosie’s House, a music academy for children.  Joywave took the stage opening with the first track on their new album, ‘Content’.   As with the album,  it was the perfect starter song, mellow and atmospheric with bits of explosive guitar and drum. From there they went into some fun dancier songs, ‘Now’ and ‘It’s a Trip’.  Halfway through their set frontman Daniel mentioned that at that point in time they were the greatest performance to ever happen on that stage… and the worst. The crowd got a good chuckle and then the band went into ‘Little Lies You’re Told’.  The passion in the bridge of this song while Daniel was yelling “Those are lies that they told you, they don’t pay the rent” was felt throughout the room very strongly and was one of my favorite moments.  The powerful guitars accompanied by delicate whistles in ‘Destruction’ got the crowd moving even more.  Before going into the last couple songs of their set, the frontman did give an unofficial tour announcement saying they would be back to Phoenix in February on a headlining tour.  The band finished their performance with the song ‘Tongues’ and the audience was all about it.

By the time Cold War Kids came everyone was in the mood to dance.  CWK kept the energy going with a good mix of old and new songs, a couple ballads, and even a Rhianna cover.  Even through a couple of technical difficulties with the sound, the guys powered through without letting it phase them.

I think this show set the bar pretty high for this venue that will be difficult to top.
