The Cuckoos: Interview

Interview by: Rebekah Witt // Answered by: Kenneth Frost

Veracious spoke with The Cuckoos about their band name, which musicians have influenced their music, and more! Check them out down below.

How did you get started in music?

I got started in music by teaching myself piano in the 10th grade. I wanted to learn Imagine by John Lennon, so I taught myself. After that, I just kept on playing.

What inspired you to make music together?

What inspired us to make music is the other music that we love. Everyone from Kate Bush to Wu Tang. We have been touched by so much music. It’s gotten us through the good times and the bad times and we want to do the same for others.

How did you get your band name?

I got the band name from the movie One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest. Simple as that!

How would you describe your sound?

I would describe our sound as Romantic Neo Retro Psychedelic Punk Funk Rock and Roll.

What artists/bands have influenced you and your music?

We’re influenced by so many artists…Joy Division, The Talking Heads, The Doors, The Beatles, Tame Impala, Bootsy Collins, Prince, Rick James, The Smiths, Iggy Pop, Jimi Hendrix, Randy Rhodes, Ozzy and Black Sabbath, Connan Mockasin, Soft Hair, The Temptations, The Isley Brothers, Al Green, Teddy Pindergrass, Miles Davis, Coltrane, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, Little Richard, James Brown, Pink Floyd, The Shaggs, The Seeds, The Kinks, The Animals, The Turtles, The Zombies, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, The Runaways, Heart, Nick Cave, Neil Young, America, Jethro Tull, Rush, and David Bowie. The list goes on.

What do you think you would be doing if you were not musicians?

If I wasn’t making music, I would be in a loony bin. I don’t think there’s anything else I would want to do. If I couldn’t make music I would give up.

What has been your biggest challenge as a band?

Our biggest challenge as a band has been writing too many songs. We need to record ’em all now. I’m starting to get behind and I don’t want to have a bunch of songs that never get heard.

What is your favorite part about being a musician?

My favorite part of being a musician is making people feel something from what we’ve created. Whether that’s good, bad, happy, or sad, I want to make them feel something.

How do you think your music has evolved since you started the band?

Our music has evolved a lot since we started the band. We’ve been playing longer. We’ve discovered and explored different genres and influences. We are getting better technically. We’re playing more shows. And I’d say we’re really coming into our own sound.

What do you have planned for 2018? (New music, tour, etc).

We have a US tour starting in May and then we are going to start recording our next record. Stay tuned!
