Housewife, KALEO @ HISTORY: Toronto, Canada 2022

Housewife and KALEO @ HISTORY in Toronto, Canada

Review and photography by Mohamad Agha

Icelandic rockstars KALEO spent two nights as part of their Canadian leg of their Fight or Flight Tour in Toronto, supported by local Toronto band Housewife (formerly known as Moscow Apartment).

Both nights of their stop in Toronto were fully sold out at HISTORY, and for good reason as the band’s last tour was in 2017. To start off the evening, local indie rock band Housewife played songs from their most recent EP, Better Daughter such as “New Girl”, “18”, as well as from their previous release, a self-titled EP. In addition, the band also teased an upcoming single set to be released sometime in May, which had the crowd incredibly excited. Housewife has been supporting KALEO on the Canadian leg of the journey, having just returned from two nights in Montreal prior to their two nights at HISTORY in Toronto.

After Housewife’s set, it was time for the main event. For the second night in a row, Grammy-nominated Icelandic rock band KALEO sold out the venue and it was absolutely packed to the brim with fans sporting KALEO merch. The band brought an incredible production with them, even including background singers. The band has been around since 2013, having released two albums, their debut album A/B in 2016, and their most recent release, Surface Sounds. As soon as the band stepped onto stage, the crowd immediately burst into cheers and roars. Their setlist was jam-packed full of incredibly powerful ballads as well as upbeat tracks. Standout tracks of the night included Icelandic folk song “Vor í Vaglaskógi” where lead singer J.J. (otherwise known as Jökull Júlíusson) sat down at a piano to play the song as well as “Brother Run Fast” with JJ’s powerful vocals echoing across the venue. The band also played my personal favorite song of theirs, “Way Down We Go”, from their debut album before transitioning to their Grammy-nominated powerful rock song “No Good” to end off the night as the encore.
